Social Enterprise

Juma Ventures has been at the forefront of the social enterprise movement in the nonprofit sector for more than a decade. We launched our first social enterprise in 1994 - at that time, Juma was the first nonprofit in the U.S. to be awarded a corporate business franchise - opening a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop in San Francisco. Since then, Juma has developed and operated six social enterprises, where youth have received jobs and business skills training, and saved toward college and other purposes. For more than a decade now, in partnership with Centerplate, Juma has operated the concessions for ice cream, coffee and nuts at the Giants baseball and 49ers football games in San Francisco, where each year about 100 youth work as vendors at AT&T Park and Monster Park.

In 2006, in a new partnership with Aramark, we have launched concession operations at the Oakland Coliseum during A's baseball and Raiders football games.

In 2007, Juma expanded to Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, and Qualcomm Stadium home of the San Diego Chargers and San Diego State Aztecs football games. Juma also partnered with Levy Restaurants at the Warriors stadium in Oakland to employs youth as cart employees selling Dryer's ice-cream and coffee.

In 2008, Juma expanded nationally, employing youth at the Nationals Stadium in Washington DC. Juma is thrilled with the chance to provide employment opportunities to youth in ballparks and cities across America. Juma youth have earned over $2.8 million in wages, while our social enterprises have generated over $6.5 million in earned revenue.

Juma Café

Juma Ventures launched its first Café in San Francisco's City Hall. Juma's Café employs youths from the city's low-income neighborhoods and juvenile justice system. Approximately half of the total applicant pool comes through "Back on Track," the District Attorney's diversion program for first-time youth offenders. Employees will receive training in sales, customer service, inventory control, forecasting, leadership, management skills, and Profit & Loss statements. Once they complete the program, café employees will work with Transition Career Coordinator at Juma Ventures to plan their job search strategy, and prepare résumés and cover letters.
